His research focuses on the governance of global finance as well as international migration in East Asia, Eastern and Southern Europe, and Latin America. The increasing urgency to govern the national repercussions of globalization, such as global financial volatilities, brain drain, and climate change, renders the development of state strategies of utmost importance. Max’s ongoing research scrutinizes the diverse state strategies and seeks to explain how variation in party systems and expert knowledge affects their creation and adoption.

The close integration of theory and practice in his research is guiding his teaching of, among others, International Finance and Strategic Management.
