Dr Jan Claudius Völkel delivers keynote speech at Université Hassan I de Settat

Dr Jan Claudius Völkel has delivered a keynote speech on Friday, 8 September 2017, at the opening ceremony of the new academic year at the Faculté des Sciences Juridiques, Économiques et Sociales, Université Hassan I de Settat, Morocco. Upon invitation of Prof. Abdeljabbar Arrach, his presentation “The Arab parliaments, the challenges of transformation, and the fight against extremism” discussed the ongoing developments across the Arab world and stressed the importance of political institutions for peaceful transitions. He claimed that functioning parliaments would be of particular importance, as they could serve as platforms for varying opinions and channel the population’s different needs into the political process. In the discussion with ca. 50 attending students and professors, Jan Völkel underlined that as long Arab states do not sufficiently respect and protect the human dignity of their citizens, protests and political uproar will likely continue to exist.
