The Institute for European Studies (IES) and the Law Science Technology & Society (LSTS) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel kindly invites you to a Policy Forum entitled "Data Protection in the days of the Internet", to be held on May 20, 2011.

Concept

The protection of personal data enjoys today an elevated status, following its recognition as a fundamental right in the Lisbon Treaty and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. The rapid introduction of new technologies and the social network phenomenon pose a number of challenges to the protection of privacy rights, however.

Programme:

12:00 Welcome Lunch and introduction by Ms Claudia La Donna, Advisor EU Strategy (Chair)

12:30 Presentations by:

  • Ms Marie-Helene Boulanger, Head of Unit, Data Protection, European Commission, DG Justice.
  • Ms Monika Kuschewsky, Partner Van Bael Bellis

14:00 End of Policy Forum

In the Policy Forum, the speakers will address how to meet these challenges in the context of the review of the Data Protection Directive 95/46/CE. The IES Policy Forums bring together representatives from academia, lawyers, business experts and policy makers to share views and stimulate a highly interactive debate on topical issues with a focus on the future.
