The third lecture from the IES policy forum dedicated to National Competition Authorities saw the participation of Mr. António Ferreira Gomes, current President of the Portuguese Competition Authority, of Dr. Komninos and of Marta Ottanelli.

Mr. Gomes, after having delineated the main features of the new Portuguese competition law, concluded by sharing his experience with regard to the cooperation of national competition authorities in the framework of the European Competition Network.

The IES celebrated the first wave of IES-VUB Master graduates for 2015 on July 1. The students were tested until the very last moment as the gown-wearing graduates received their diplomas in record high temperatures in a ceremony at the Institute.

On Monday the 6th of July twenty students from twelve countries gathered in Brussels for the start of the 12th edition of the Summer School on EU Policy–making. The Summer School, organised in cooperation with the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna and the University of Vienna, offers an intensive two-weeks programme in Brussels in Vienna, including lectures, visits to the EU institutions and the UN and two engaging simulation games whereby the students experience the negotiations environment of the European Union.

On the 8th of J une, IES researchers Alexandra Mihai, Silviu Piros, Serena D’Agostino and Executive Director Anthony Antoine returned to Bucharest to assess the first outcomes of the Euroentrepreneurship project where the IES is partnering the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration in its endeavor to update and align both curricula and teaching methods to the European standards and contribute to the Europeanization of the Romanian society.

The IES, as a partner in the FP7 project SOURCE, is currently conducting a series of short film interviews with civil society members, European citizens, scholars, researchers, industry representatives, NGOs and policy makers on how they perceive societal security. Two video interviews have been already conducted with Sebastian Denef, a researcher at Fraunhofer headquarters Berlin and the CEO of Uberblik, and with Ida Haisma, Director of The Hague Security Delta (HSD).


On 19-20 June IES President Bart De Schutter, Executive Director Anthony Antoine and EDU researchers Alexandra Mihai and Silviu Piros travelled to Chisinau, Moldova, to attend the mid-term conference of the Innovating Teaching and Learning of European Studies (INOTLES) project.

On 25-26 June 2015, the IES hosted the REFRACT project for its kick-off meeting. The Research Network on Fragmentation and Complexity in Global Governance is sponsored by the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO) and aims at fostering scientific exchanges on institutional fragmentation in the international sphere, a rapidly emerging research field due to the growing proliferation of international regimes claiming authority over similar issue areas.

Newly published by Palgrave Macmillan: Decarbonization in the European Union: Internal Policies and External Strategies - Edited by IES' Dr. Claire Dupont and Prof. Dr. Sebastian Oberthür
The authors investigate how far the EU is along the road to decarbonisation, and what remains to be done in policy development. They also seek to understand whether the decarbonisaton goal is a central feature of the EU's external relations with its energy partners, and how these relations could change under decarbonisation.

The Institute for European Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (IES-VUB), the Institut d’Études Européennes at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (IEE-ULB), the United Nations University Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS), and Egmont – the Royal Institute for International Relations invite paper abstracts and panel proposals for the fifth European Union in International Affairs (#EUIA16) conference.

IES PhD student Klaudia Majcher reports back from a summer school on ‘Advanced Competition Law & Economics’ that took place in the Italian Dolomites and was organised by the Osservatorio Antitrust based at the Faculty of Law of Trento University.
