EU post 2020 climate and energy governance
“Streamlining for Performance”
In October 2014, the EU Heads of State and Government agreed to increase the EU’s greenhouse gas reduction target to -40% by 2030. EU leaders also agreed to an EU level binding renewable energy target of 27% and 27% energy savings by the same date. These last two targets will however not be turned into binding goals at the national level. A new governance system will be developed to enable the delivery of EU wide targets through national climate and energy plans. The legal implementation of the EU’s 2030 climate and energy goals, the new governance system and the reform of the EU energy market will dominate the EU’s legislative climate and energy agenda over the next years.
The Institute for European Studies cordially invites you to a one day workshop which will take place on Thursday 19th November, aimed at informing this debate. The goal is to bring researchers, stakeholders and policy makers together, to present and discuss the latest research insights and ideas on post 2020 EU climate and energy policies.
The main topics to be addressed during the workshop are:
- How can EU binding targets be achieved in the absence of national binding targets?
- The design of national climate and energy plans, the reporting thereof and how these can be pillars for good governance
- Future-proofing the EU’s climate and energy policy: 2050 decarbonisation, innovation and industrial policy
