Undergraduate Summer Programme students conclude Belgian Brewery Industry course with bottling phase

Each year, the Undergraduate Summer Programme at the Brussels School of Governance offers students the chance to participate in the course "The Belgian Brewery Industry in a Global Context: Business, Economics, Culture, and Innovation." In the current year, a group of eight students, including BSoG BA students and study abroad students, had the privilege of being a part of this enriching experience.

In the latest chapter of their educational journey, the students of the Undergraduate Summer Programme engaged in the final stage of the brewing process: bottling. Our students received expert guidance from Casey Wellman, an alumnus of Vesalius College (Brussels School of Governance) and an experienced professional in the brewing industry.

Casey, currently working as a Guide and Assistant Brewer at Brasserie De Ranke generously shared his extensive knowledge and passion for brewing with the students. With his expert supervision, they filled and capped the bottles, ensuring a precise and efficient execution of the process.

To personalize their creations, the students designed and attached their own unique labels to each bottle. This allowed them to showcase their individual creativity and dedication, adding a personal touch to their finished products.

Following the bottling phase, the beer requires a period of time for the yeast to consume the sugar and for the carbon dioxide to be absorbed. Consequently, the students must be patient for approximately three weeks before they can fully appreciate the flavours of their crafted brew.

During this waiting period, the beer undergoes a natural maturation process, allowing it to reach its optimal taste profile. This time allows the yeast to complete its fermentation, resulting in a balanced and refined flavour.

The student's journey through the Belgian Brewery Industry has been a valuable educational experience. From understanding the intricacies of the brewing process to witnessing firsthand the expertise of industry professionals, they have gained valuable insights into this fascinating field.
